"Supporting Pediatric Cancer Treatment: Sports Medicine Services at Madisen's Match Charity Tennis Event"

I am often asked how I got into the field of physical therapy and sports medicine. Well, It all started back in high school when I was competing in a track and field event and badly injured my ankle. My coach, who was more concerned with the team’s performance, told me to “walk it off.” Fortunately, my mom knew better. I showed up the next day in a cast and on crutches. I didn’t want other kids to suffer the same fate. When I found out about Athletic Training and how I could care for athlete injuries on the field or court, I knew where I needed to be.

Fast forward a few years, and I am still serving athletes of all ages and abilities. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to provide sports medicine and physical therapy services at a local, charitable tennis event called Madisen’s Match, where legendary tennis pros provide teaching clinics and play side-by-side with local recreational tennis players. I set up my treatment table early Sunday morning, and I didn’t wait long to get to work helping tennis friends and some of the celebrity tennis pros with nagging injuries. I was busy all day!

Madisen's Match was started to use the game of tennis and bring the community together to raise money to help other adults and children being treated for cancer.  Over the past 9 years, Madisen's Match has raised over $1,250,000 to benefit cancer treatment programs. Since 2011, the funds raised from Madisen's Match have exclusively gone to support "Barbara's Friends, The Golisano Children's Hospital Cancer Center Fund.” www.madisensmatch.com

Players and event organizers were grateful for my services, and I hope I made a difference keeping them all healthy and on the court. It’s important to give back to our community, and I am happy I could offer my 35+ years of experience in sports medicine and orthopedics for such a great local charity event. I am looking forward to helping again next year.
